Europa-Park, the largest theme park in Germany, welcomed more than 5.5 million visitors in 2016 – a new record for the resort.

“With over 5.5 million visitors, we once again look back on a record year for our company,” said Europa-Park owner, Roland Mack.

Last year saw the Mack family invest more than €20m ($18.6m) in the amusement park. This included the development of a new themed area, Ireland: Children’s World, which saw the creation of 100 new jobs.

“After the season came to a close on January 8, for the first time Europa-Park offered its visitors a special opening on January 13-15 to celebrate the world premiere of DJ BoBo’s new ‘Mystorial’ tour,” Mack said.

The Swiss DJ has been a regular guest to the theme park over the past 20 years, and his appearance earlier this month marked the opening of the new Europa-Park Arena.

The modern events hall, which costs more than €10m ($9.3m), has been created to host a range of shows, concerts and television events.

This year will see continued investment in Europa-Park. During the 2017 season, visitors will be able to experience Europe’s largest Flying Theatre.

The immersive ‘Project V’ attraction will see passengers glide through the air in chairlift-style gondolas, complete with wind, water, scent and video effects.
