In December, polar cub Knut made headlines around the world after its mother rejected it.

Instead, the bear is being hand-reared by staff, much to the delight of media and visitors alike.

The zoo reported attendances of over 200,000 in March, more than double its usual figure and is selling merchandise of the popular cub faster than it can re-stock it.

However, amid all the attention, the zoo had some bad news to report. One of its previous star attractions, the 22-year-old panda Lady Yan Yan – on loan from China – died following complications brought on by constipation.
