Walt Disney Imagineering has announced it will modify the Jungle Cruise attractions at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom in California and Florida respectively.

The Jungle Cruise ride involves a skipper ferrying visitors along a waterway. The ride has come under criticism, called out for “distasteful imagery”, namely for the scenes that depict “natives” along the riverway acting wild, primitive and threatening.

The proposed changes will include the introduction of an animatronic jungle skipper to the Adventureland attractions.

Carmen Smith, creative development and inclusion strategies executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, commented: “As Imagineers, it is our responsibility to ensure experiences we create and stories we share reflect the voices and perspective of the world around us.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean ride, inspired by the film franchise, also came under criticism for its animatronic scenes that show pirates selling female prisoners.
