As part of the publication’s first annual awards, readers were asked to nominate their favourite items, places and people from the world of fruit, vegetable and herb growing. Eden was voted the best garden open to the public, a category that also included the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and RHS Garden Wisley.

Winners in the other 19 categories in which readers voted include Carol Klein in the gardening celebrity category and Jamie Oliver’s Jamie at Home in the cookbook section.

Gaynor Coley, Eden’s managing director, said: "At Eden we enjoy reconnecting all age ranges with the soil and encourage getting hands on with planting and growing, so it’s a great honour to be recognised in these inaugural awards. Thank you to all those readers who took the time to vote."
