After more than 34 years of service, leading Dutch theme park Efteling is to retire its Bob coaster to make way for a new duel tracked rollercoaster from Mack Rides for 2020.

The Swiss theming and station building of the bobsleigh themed ride will be retained for the new attraction, which will be called Max and Moritz in honour of a famous German poem about two naughty boys.

Like Bob (pictured above), which was built by Intamin, the replacement ride will be suitable for almost all the family thanks to its minimum passenger height of just 1.0m. Construction of the track will start in September 2019 and the ride should be up an running by the following spring. Efteling is committing €15 million ($17.4m) to the project.

With the announcement of Max and Moritz, the opening of another new attraction in a soon-to-be expanded area to the east of the park will be postponed until 2021. When it does open, it will form part of a completely new themed area called Reizenrijk next to the original Efteling Hotel. Renovations at the hotel and a few smaller attractions are also planned.

Ahead of all the above, a new fairytale scene will be added to the park’s Sprookjesbos (Fairytale Forest) in autumn 2019. Based on the The Six Swans by the Brothers Grimm, it will be the 30th fairytale to join the forest, located between Snow White’s cave and Cinderella’s house.
The Sprookjesbo was one of the first attractions to open in Efteling when the park in Kaatseheuvel (near Tilburg) debuted in 1952.
