Moonraker VFX, creators of visual effects and CGI content for visitor attractions, museums and TV, have helped transform Bodmin Jail, a leading historical site in Cornwall, into an immersive, authentic cinematic experience for visitors.

Moonraker VFX were appointed for the project by visitor attraction experts, Sarner International, to provide the audio visual content for the attraction.

Sarner and Moonraker have worked together on many occasions, including on the Fram Musuem in Norway and the Doctor Who Experience in London.

The immersive feature at Bodmin Jail is known as the ‘Dark Wall’ experience, which showcases Moonraker’s cinematic films and projected effects. Visitors are taken on an atmospheric and immersive journey through Cornwall’s colourful past, reliving stories that shaped life in the eerie 18th century prison.

Combining production, visual effects and storytelling expertise, Moonraker delivered more than 30 different formats of content, including large-scale projections, holograms and AR applications.

Graham Watts, Moonraker’s creative lead, commented “It was important that every projection felt like part of the same cohesive design and an authentic vision. It is the same level of detail as a film, the objective for visitors to feel as though they are fully immersed in the stories and life of the 18th century Jail”.

The Dark Wall experience reopened at Bodmin Jail in early October.
