A 140-feet-tall (42m) drop tower will open at New York’s Coney Island over the Memorial Day weekend.

The Astro Tower will be launched on May 26 and is the latest of many rides at Luna Park provided by Zamperla. It is pictured above together with the Italian manufacturer’s Thunderbolt coaster.

The new addition will lift thrill-seekers 14 storeys into the sky. They will then rotate around the tower, enjoying a sweeping view of “the people’s playground”, before being released into a freefall punctuated by a series of bounce movements.

The thrill ride has been named after Coney Island’s historic rotating observation tower, which was nearly double its size but dismantled in 2013 amid fear it would fall down. Now, riders can enjoy a freefall every time they ride the new Astro Tower.
