Plans have been submitted for the construction of a £60m surf lagoon known as Modern Surf Manchester.

The venue will feature waves powered by Wavegarden, creators of artificial wave technology. Wavegarden’s waves are already used at surf attractions in the UK, including Surf Snowdonia and The Wave.

The plans have been submitted to Trafford Council by Leslie Jones Architecture and McKinney Group.

The venue will by built on the disused land of an industrial site not far from Old Trafford. The objective of the design is to combine a modern surf culture with the industrial heritage of the site the surf park will sit on.

To proposed surf park will integrate skating and bouldering with other activities. There will also be an F&B outlet, a surf shop and pop-up beach bars.

Billy McKinney, managing director at McKinney Group, said: “The designs include street artwork collaborations and a generous interactive landscape public realm for workout and play.

“We are really excited to have submitted our plans to Trafford Council, off the back of months of discussions with the local community, stakeholders and planning officers.

“Trafford Coty already has a huge and growing leisure offer and we are looking forward to bringing something new to the area that is thrilling, interactive and accessible to be enjoyed by surfers of all abilities,” McKinney added.
