In a cruise industry first, Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras ocean liner is to feature a rollercoaster at sea when it debuts in 2020.

Named BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster, the open-air thrill ride by Maurer will offer nearly 800 feet (220m) of exhilarating twists, turns and drops. During each 45 second experience, riders will reach speeds of nearly 40 miles per hour (60km/h).

The all-electric coaster, using Maurer’s Spike ride system, allows two passengers in a motorcycle-like vehicle to race along a track 187ft (57m) above sea level. In the process, riders will experience the sea in an exciting new way with breathtaking 360° views.

BOLT begins with an action-packed launch where ride vehicles can achieve race car-like levels of acceleration (up to 1.2G) and culminates with a high-powered hair-pin turn around the ship’s funnel.  Riders choose their own speed, which is posted after the “race”. Just like many land-based rollercoasters, guests will have their photo taken during the ride for a memorable keepsake.

Mardi Gras will be based at a new state-of-the-art cruise terminal in Port Canaveral, Florida. Its itinerary will be revealed in early January, and additional details about other groundbreaking features will be announced throughout 2019.
