Blackpool Illuminations are set to be switched on this Friday – with the addition of a new illuminous creation called Disco Donkey Cavalcade.

The curator behind the work is Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen, who is behind some of the most recent display work of the world renown Illuminations. Its centrepiece feature is of donkeys, twelve donkeys in all, taking their place on a 16-feet high platform above an ice cream topped by a disco ball – the perfect eclectic mix of the spirit of Blackpool.

Another highlight visitors can sample at the 2024 Illuminations is a Buzz Wire arcade game, where visitors can show their nerves of steel on a specially designed installation reflecting the Blackpool skyline. Buzz Wire will be located on the Tower Festival Headland.

The Chandelier Causeway has been given a fresh lease of life with shimmering LED chandeliers and strobe lighting acknowledging the famous Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

Meanwhile, the Spitfire Island display will mark the D-Day landings’ 80th anniversary with special markings on the three Spitfire replicas on Gynn Roundabout.

The ride the lights bike event took place the Tuesday before the lights’ switch on where thousands of cycling enthusiasts enjoyed the pre illuminations festival with decorated lighted bikes.

Blackpool illuminations will be switched on by pop artist Mel B on 30 August at 9:15pm and will be shining until 5 January, 2025.
