Listen to this article

A critically endangered Bornean orangutan born earlier this year at Blackpool Zoo has been named Rufus, in a heartwarming tribute to the mascot of Calea Homecare, an organization dedicated to supporting children with acute and chronic medical conditions.

A Special Connection

Rufus, the baby orangutan, was named after Calea Homecare’s beloved mascot, also named Rufus, who plays a crucial role in connecting with young patients and their families. This initiative was sparked during a visit by patients and staff from Calea Homecare to Blackpool Zoo, where they met the zoo’s new baby orangutan and discussed the significance of the name.

The Story Behind Rufus

Calea Homecare’s Rufus was created to help children understand their condition, particularly those requiring Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN), a treatment for intestinal failure. Rufus the mascot has been central to various educational tools, including literature, videos, stories, and even a cuddly toy replica.

A New Addition to Blackpool Zoo

Born at the end of April to first-time mother Summer, who has been a resident of Blackpool Zoo since 2002, baby Rufus is the second orangutan born at the zoo in 20 years. His father, Kawan, arrived at Blackpool Zoo in 2022 from Apenheul Zoo in the Netherlands, as part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP).

Conservation Efforts

The Bornean orangutan was classified as critically endangered in July 2016 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), making breeding programs like the EEP vital for the survival of the species. Darren Webster, Director at Blackpool Zoo, expressed his delight at the birth and naming of Rufus, emphasizing the importance of such programs in preserving the future of these magnificent creatures.

A Day to Remember

Hannah Cutler, Associate Business Development Manager at Calea Homecare, shared her excitement about the naming, stating, “We were over the moon when we were told that Blackpool Zoo would be naming their beautiful baby orangutan after our mascot, Rufus. He’s been engaging with patients and their families for many years, so having such a special baby named after him is a true honor.”

The naming of baby Rufus at Blackpool Zoo not only celebrates the birth of a critically endangered species but also highlights the meaningful work of Calea Homecare and its mascot, Rufus. This heartwarming story is a reminder of the connections that can be made between the world of wildlife conservation and the care of those facing medical challenges.
