Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are to build a new theme park at the Mahalaxmi racecourse.
The BMC estate department has also formally requested the state government to return a plot of the land it rightfully owns.
There have been long standing plans to create the theme park on the site of the racecourse.
The area of the racecourse is 8.54 lakh sq. m. Of this, 5.96 lakh sq.m. belongs to the state government and 2.58 lakh sq. m. is custody of BMC.
After the lease was over in 1994, BMC renewed it till 2013. BMC then decided to end the lease and develop a theme park on the plot, but no action was taken till now.
It would represent a novel twist of a horse racing venue converted to a theme park. But that that is exactly the blueprint which BMC has to finally bring to life its long-standing dream.
