The Seattle City Council has approved a $34m expansion of the Seattle Aquarium. The Ocean Pavilion expansion will include a 325,000-gallon tank, which will be home to stingrays, sharks and exotic fish from the South Pacific’s Coral Triangle.
The tank will act like an ecosystem, with sharks swimming near the surface and rays resting on the bottom. A ‘Sharkulus’ will provide views of the shark and ray exhibit from the rooftop terrace and plaza level.
As well as a huge tank, the new Ocean Pavilion will feature theatrical spaces, immersive living exhibits, hands-out exploration, transportive ecological experiences and views looking out on an urban landscape.
It is believed that the Seattle Aquarium extension could open as early as 2023.
