Maurer Rides' iconic X-Car Launch Coaster is celebrating its fifth birthday in 2012. The first coaster of this type went into operation at the Drievliet Family Park in the Netherlands in 2007, and since then it has attracted around 500,000 visitors per year. The enthusiasm of park operator, Piet Faaij, remains high.

What makes the X-Car Launch Coaster so special?
The fact that Maurer has managed to cram a large amount of track into such a small area means that we, as park operators, can still operate a great coaster despite there being so little space available.

Does this mean that the Launch Coaster makes use of height?
It is not that simple for us, because we have to comply with a height restriction of 15m. The launch was an ideal solution so that we could still provide a special experience. With its linear synchronous motor (LSM) the coaster accelerates to 70km/h in two seconds.

What energy is required for the launch?
That is a further special feature of the coaster. It is equipped with a device that temporarily stores energy. We supply it with only 100 to 125 amperes. This energy is accumulated in the flywheel so that we can release 700 amperes for the launch – this is very efficient. We can release this launch power every 11 to 12 seconds.

What do the guests think of the coaster after five years of operation?
It is one of the biggest attractions at our park. This coaster offers a huge amount of fun. The experience it provides is exceptionally intense – there is no time to lean back and think. In addition, the most important thing for me is to see people coming off the coaster with a big smile. We provide enjoyment, again and again, and of course that pleases me very much as well.

How has it been integrated into the park concept?
We have around 500,000 visitors a year and around 25 rides in the park, including three other coasters. The Launch Coaster is especially important for us to have something to offer the older teenagers. Since we are a family park, we want to inspire the children from six to 16. With this coaster we address in particular the oldest ones in this target group – and their parents. And you really need to have something special to offer these young people, otherwise they no longer come here with their parents when they are at that age. In addition, we have many regular visitors who buy a season ticket. Here too, the Maurer Launch Coaster is a real magnet.

Do you ride this coaster yourself?
Yes, but rather for test purposes so that I can constantly check whether every- thing has been set properly. A special feature is also that this coaster runs very smoothly despite its dense sequence of ride elements. This means that continuous checking and maintenance is important to us.
