Colossus – A classic wooden giant rises at Six Flags Qiddiya City

Listen to this article

Among the record-breaking attractions of Six Flags Qiddiya City – a park defined by cutting-edge coaster technology and world-first engineering feats – Colossus stands apart. While many of the park’s headline rides push the limits of steel coaster innovation, Colossus embraces something far more timeless: the unmistakable character of a great wooden roller coaster.

The ride delivers a classic “woodie” experience built on modern engineering, combining traditional wooden coaster sensations with contemporary design techniques. At approximately 29 metres tall and reaching speeds of around 80 km/h, Colossus may not claim the extreme statistics of some of its neighbours, but its purpose within the park is clear: to deliver a fast-paced, highly repeatable thrill ride that celebrates the enduring appeal of wooden coaster design.

Stretching close to 900 metres of track – roughly the length of eight football fields – Colossus occupies a prominent position within the park’s sprawling landscape, its lattice of timber structure visible from across the site and serving as one of the park’s most recognisable silhouettes.

Engineering a modern wooden coaster

Behind Colossus lies a collaboration between Great Coasters International and Orlando-based engineering firm Skyline Attractions, whose partnership has helped shape a new generation of wooden coaster technology.

Since 2014, Skyline Attractions has worked closely with GCI to provide design and engineering support for the company’s projects. The collaboration has produced several notable innovations, including the Infinity Flyer coaster trains – articulated vehicles designed specifically for wooden coasters. The trains allow tighter turns, smoother transitions and more dynamic ride profiles while maintaining the traditional feel that wooden coaster fans expect.

This partnership reflects a broader evolution in wooden coaster design. By combining GCI’s expertise in timber coaster construction with Skyline’s engineering and design capabilities, the companies have been able to push the boundaries of what a wooden ride can achieve while preserving the classic riding sensations that define the genre.

Colossus represents another example of that philosophy in action: a ride that respects wooden coaster heritage while quietly integrating modern engineering solutions behind the scenes.

Ride statistics and technical profile

Colossus delivers a classic wooden coaster layout designed around speed, momentum and sustained airtime rather than inversions.

————————————————————————————–

Key ride specifications include:

  • Height: approx. 29 m (95 ft)
  • Drop: approx. 27 m
  • Track length: approx. 862–889 m
  • Top speed: approx. 80 km/h (50 mph)
  • Inversions: none
  • Trains: three trains with 20 riders each
  • Seating: two-across lap-bar configuration

————————————————————————————–

The ride utilises a traditional chain lift hill followed by a twisting layout packed with airtime hills and sweeping turns. Industry analysis of the layout suggests the ride delivers dozens of airtime moments across its course, creating a fast-paced experience that rarely pauses once the train leaves the lift hill.

Rather than relying on a single headline element, the ride’s design focuses on rhythm and pacing – a hallmark of modern GCI wooden coasters.

The ride experience

The experience begins with a slow, nostalgic climb up the lift hill, the familiar rattle and shake of the wooden track immediately evoking the classic woodie atmosphere. Old-style lighting and the creaking structure reinforce the illusion of stepping into coaster history, even as modern engineering quietly supports the ride beneath the surface.

As the train crests the summit, the view opens out across Six Flags Qiddiya City in spectacular fashion – a breathtaking panorama framed by the dramatic cliffs that surround the park. For a moment, riders are presented with a full sweep of the destination’s extraordinary skyline.

There is scarcely time to take it in.

The train plunges into the first drop and immediately launches into a relentless sequence of turns, twists and airtime hills. With no inversions, the ride focuses instead on sustained airtime and sweeping directional changes, the tight lap restraint quickly proving its purpose as the train lifts riders from their seats again and again.

Speed builds rapidly as the track dives through a series of long, banked turns that exaggerate the sense of velocity. Around every corner, new views appear: coaster tracks looping across the park like ribbons in the wind, carnival rides spinning below, observation towers rising above the skyline and amusement halls stretching into the distance – all framed by the rugged desert cliffs beyond.

One element remains constant throughout the ride: the wooden track itself. The great timber structure cuts freely across the park landscape, carving a path this way and that as it sees fit. It is as compelling to watch as it is to ride, the sweeping curves of the track visible from almost anywhere in the park.

Fast, thrilling and deeply satisfying, Colossus delivers a blast of hot desert air that leaves riders eager for another turn.

A wooden icon within a record-breaking park

Within the extraordinary coaster collection at Six Flags Qiddiya City, Colossus plays an important role in balancing the park’s attraction portfolio.

While the park is defined by cutting-edge steel coaster technology and extreme ride statistics, Colossus demonstrates that the classic wooden roller coaster remains as relevant as ever. Its imposing timber structure provides a striking visual landmark within the park while delivering an experience built on rhythm, airtime and pure riding pleasure.

In a destination built to push the limits of modern theme park engineering, Colossus proves that sometimes the most enduring thrills still come from wood, gravity and speed.
