The 2014 edition of the World's Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL) takes place on June 20, with the event's organisers attempting to set a fifth Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson ever conducted.

Team WLSL holds the current Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson, which stands at 32,450 participants hosted by 432 facilities in 13 countries.

Supported by the World Waterpark Association (WWA), the 2013 event saw a 30 per cent increase over the previous year's record of 24,873, as the event continues to raise awareness about the importance of swimming lessons.

"Tragically, drowning remains the leading cause of unintended, injury related death for children ages 1-5, and the second leading cause for children under 14," the WLSL team said.

"Research shows participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 per cent among children aged 1-4, yet many kids do not receive formal swimming or water safety training."
