The National Science and Media Museum, located in Bradford, has closed as it prepares for an important refurbishment.
The upgrade is expected to last one year, and the museum is earmarking a reopening in the summer of 2024. A £6 million investment has been secured, through the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Once the museum is up and running, its new facilities, called Sound and Vision, will include two new gallery spaces on Levels 3 and 5, better access throughout the museum and a bigger reception area.
Although the closure will mark a year without activities at the museum itself, during the summer months, the museum staff will be on hand with learning activities at Bradford Museums & Galleries, and Bradford Libraries.
Jo Quinton-Tulloch, Director of the National Science and Media Museum said: “Thank you to everyone who visited us over our final weekend before our major transformation begins.
“It was a fantastic weekend with thousands of visitors taking part in Bradford Science Festival activities and visiting our IMAX.
“While the museum is closed, visitors will still have plenty of opportunities to keep in touch with us as we’ll be delivering a fantastic learning programme in schools in and around Bradford, as well as continuing our popular festival programme with Widescreen Weekend returning this September.”
