The National Museum of the Royal Navy has secured Development Round funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to support the ‘Reimagination of Boathouse 6’ project at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. This project will transform the 1840s Grade II* Boathouse 6 into the new home for the Royal Marines Museum.
Boathouse 6 will feature a permanent exhibition gallery, a Royal Marines Commando-themed Laser Quest Arena, and a new auditorium and conferencing facility. The museum aims to tell the compelling story of the Royal Marines, from their origins in 1664 to the present day, through immersive and interactive exhibits.
The project has received over £6 million in funds and pledges, but still needs an additional £3.5 million to be fully realized. If successful in the next phase of funding, the new museum is set to open with a range of new attractions designed to engage and educate visitors about the Royal Marines’ history and ethos.
The National Museum of the Royal Navy, in partnership with the Mary Rose Trust, hopes to attract new and diverse audiences to the Dockyard, enhancing its position as a top visitor attraction.
