All aboard! Rainbow’s End in Auckland, New Zealand, has officially opened its Pirate Ship, Pacifica – named for the final ocean she sailed to reach her new home.

The original Pirate Ship was a firm favourite for almost 40 years before being decommissioned in 2017 due to the limited availability of replacement parts.

Kiwi love for the ride never wavered, and after repeated requests from fans, Rainbow’s End began work in late 2022 to bring a brand-new Pirate Ship home for Kiwis.

Built to rigorous specifications by German manufacturer Huss Park Attractions, the ship is now ready to voyage featuring upgraded theming and enhanced guest care features.

The ride presents immersive storytelling elements to bring the Pirate Ship story to life including the transformation of the original figurehead, Captain Esmerelda, into a living character, plus a brand-new sea shanty and an accompanying children’s book.

Furthermore, Pacifica sets sail with up to 50 passengers per ride, the largest capacity of any ride at the Park. The ride swings 75° to each side, measures 13-metres long and weighs 25 metric tonnes, the same as four African bull elephants.

Meanwhile, guests in the back rows will experience a thrilling moment of weightlessness at over 20-metres in the air as the ship swings downward.

“Pirate Ship being swept up in a wave of nostalgia”

Susan Mudie, CEO at Rainbow’s End says, “Pacifica has been nearly three years in the making, and it has been a project filled with passion and excitement. The team and I have watched it slowly come to life, and in these past couple of months especially, you can feel the energy and anticipation building in the air. We feel privileged to be bringing a new ship home.”

“We’re looking forward to fans of the original Pirate Ship being swept up in a wave of nostalgia, while younger thrill seekers get the chance to sail the seas in this new and improved version,” adds Mudie.

“The Pirate Ship has always been an icon at Rainbow’s End, and with its return we’re excited for a fun summer ahead and new memories made among Kiwi families, thrill seekers and pirates alike.”
