Universal Destinations & Experiences launches its first theme park built exclusively for young children, marking a significant strategic shift for one of the world’s largest attractions operators.
Universal Destinations & Experiences opened Universal Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas on 1 July 2026 – the sixth Universal Studios Resort and the third in the United States. Across 20 acres, the park offers seven themed lands built around well-known licensed characters, with a clear brief to serve families with young children rather than thrill-seeking older guests.
Construction began in November 2023, with an estimated development cost of around $550 million. The opening date itself shifted several times during the build phase. By February 2026, the park was set to open in late 2026; the 1 July date was confirmed only on 28 May.
The seven lands are: DreamWorks’ Shrek’s Swamp, Jurassic World Adventure Camp, Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants Bikini Bottom, Illumination’s Minions vs. Minions: Bello Bay Club, DreamWorks’ TrollsFest, DreamWorks’ Puss in Boots Del Mar, and the Isle of Curiosity featuring DreamWorks’ Gabby’s Dollhouse. The Isle of Curiosity acts as the park’s central hub. Guests will find Gabby’s Cat-Tastic Dance Party, Cakey’s Cupcakes, the Universal Kids Resort Café and the flagship resort store there.
‘This is a theme park built with kids in mind,’ said Sharon Parker, director of marketing and sales for Universal Kids Resort. The design philosophy is reflected in ride selection. Experiences are scaled for younger guests – interactive, exploratory and, in several areas, water-based.
On-site accommodation is provided by Universal Kids Resort Hotel, located at the park entrance. The 300-room property includes family suites, dining, an outdoor pool and family-friendly amenities. The park also opened on the same day as Universal Pictures’ animated film Minions & Monsters – a deliberate alignment between the resort’s IP portfolio and the studio’s release schedule.
