The first fully accessible art depot in the world has opened in Rotterdam. The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen opened in the Netherlands’ second largest city on November 6.
The museum is home to a vast collection of 151,000 artworks and is hailed as the world’s first publicly accessible art storage facility.
The venue comprises of exhibition halls, curators’ studios, a rooftop garden that has spectacular views of the city, and a restaurant.
MVRDV, the Rotterdam-based architectural company, designed the 167,000sq. ft storage building.
As well as meandering round the artwork, guests at the museum can learn about how to care for an art collection and be informed about the restoration, packaging and transportation processes.
Sjarel Ex and Ina Klaassen, directors at Boijmans Van Beuningen, commented: “Opening up this collection is important. The objects and artworks that artists and designers have produced are an essential part of our thinking and acting.
“This new tool, this new typology, helps us to preserve and open up these treasures. The best part is yet to come: the building as we have devised it is now going to shape us,” they added.
