The Hans Christian Andersen Museum has opened in the town of Odense, Denmark. The opening of the museum dedicated to the famous writer follows a ten-year renovation project.
Hans Christian Andersen was born in the city of Odense, where the museum is located. The museum was designed by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.
The museum extends over 5,600 square metres of space. It is focused on the life, work and literary universe of Hans Christian Andersen. The museum brings the writer’s stories to life by fusing architecture, sound, light and images.
On June 31, 2021, the new museum was inaugurated by Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II. The renovation project was able to go ahead by a donation by the A.P. Møller Foundation, a commercial foundation which donates proceeds to various social, cultural and educational projects in Denmark, Greenland the Faroe Islands and other Nordic countries.
Ane Maersk mc-Kinney Uggla, chairman of the A.P. Møller Foundation, said: ““H.C. Andersen has to be our greatest poet.
“He captivates children and adults alike with his magical stories, which people all over the world can see themselves in to this day. It is our hope that we, with the new museum, are approaching the core of H.C. Andersen’s universe.”
