CARO – Efteling’s new show has international appeal

Listen to this article

Jam-packed with acrobatics, special effects, song and dance, CARO is different to other shows at Efteling for one important reason.

In order to appeal to an international audience, the new production in the Dutch park’s Efteling Theatre features almost no spoken word. During the opening night performance on September 16, Marcel Visscher and Talita Angwarmasse sang their hearts out in their roles as Mr and Mrs Time.

The standing ovation at the end was proof that the theatre-goers had identified themselves with the story and had, for a while, let themselves be carried along in the ‘merry-go-round of life’.
CARO is in line with Efteling’s ambition to reach out beyond its strong Dutch following and become an international short-break destination.

“Producing a theatre show in which speech and language are subordinate was a real challenge,” says Efteling creative director Olaf Vugts. “Fortunately, the music composed especially for CARO by René Merkelbach creates a storyline that is easy to relate to and understand”.
