The city of Sevilla in southern Spain has celebrated the 500th anniversary of the arrival of the expedition of the first journey around the world.

The anniversary celebrates the moment the intrepid sailors, captained by firstly Fernando de Magallanes and finished with Juan Sebastien Elcano arrived in the city on 8th September 1522.

239 sailors commenced their voyage around the world in 1519 and finished three years later with 18 survivors of the landmark Spanish trip. This trip put Sevilla firmly on the map.

In tribute to the historic feat, a weeklong festival of festivities took place. This included King Felipe visiting the city to greet the Mayor of Sevilla, Antonio Munoz. He commented: Sevilla is a city very much alive and a city making waves. The commemoration of the first circumnavigation is part of our rich history and will be forever linked to the name of Sevilla, Andalucía and Spain.”

Other acts included a light celebration with 250 drones lightning up the two captains of the ship which sailed around the world.

Throughout the week, a maritime festive called the Fifth Centenary was held by the river displaying four prominent ships of the voyage. Visitors could climb on board to take a closer look at the ships which are dripping in history and authenticity. A live show depicting the sailors of the past and buy authentic garments with ships related souvenirs were also in its offer as were a selection food and beverage stands. 

In keeping with the historical theme, there were small attractions for the children to enjoy such as a medieval Ferris wheel.
