Prolonged economic turmoil in the eurozone has resulted in a drop in both visitors and revenues for the Spanish leisure market.

According to a newly published study from DBK, a subsidiary of consultancy Informa D&B, Spain's top 126 leisure parks received 32.6 million visitors in 2012, down 0.9 per cent on the previous year. Revenues slipped 0.8 per cent to €594m ($784m).

By business segment, theme parks showed the best performance, with a turnover of €190m ($251m) in 2012, up 1.6 per cent on previous year. Waterparks revenue stood at €136m ($180m).

The turnover generated by zoos, aquariums and nature parks, meanwhile, dropped 3.1 per cent. Fairground revenues slipped 2.1 per cent, the study indicates.

The drop in visitor numbers and revenues was attributed primarily to a decline in leisure spend by Spanish residents and a slowing foreign tourism market.

According to DBK, further declines are expected in 2013.
