Drayton Manor is to reimagine its main roller coaster Shockwave for next season.

The thrill ride still remains the UK’s only stand-up roller coaster since its opening in 1994.

A storied 30-year existence of giving rider lovers a hearty dose of adrenaline will ramp up more in 2024 thanks to a facelift consisting of a new name and a new theming.

However, its main difference will be the end of its stand-up element, with Drayton Manor electing for new seated trains.

At the time of its opening, Shockwave was Europe’s first stand-up roller coaster courtesy of Intamin. In its current guise, the ride hits a top speed of 53mph and has a zero-gravity roll.

The move is the latest push by owners The Looping Group to cement Drayton Manor as a top theme park destination.
