Celebrated music legend and philanthropist Dolly Parton has been named the 2024 recipient of the PEACE Through Music Award on October 25, 2024, an honor presented by the U.S. Department of State and the Recording Academy®. The award recognizes an American music industry figure whose contributions to cross-cultural exchanges advance global peace and mutual understanding. Parton will be celebrated tonight at the GRAMMY Museum® in Los Angeles in a ceremony hosted by the Department of State and the Recording Academy®. This event also highlights the inaugural participants of the American Music Mentorship Program, which took place from October 15–25 in Los Angeles.
As a global music icon and a force of goodwill, Dolly Parton embodies the values of the PEACE Through Music Award: fostering understanding, peace, inclusion, and unity. The PEACE Through Music Award selection process includes nominations from U.S. embassies worldwide, reviewed by a selection committee composed of Recording Academy® members, State Department leadership, music industry professionals, and academic representatives. Final honorees are approved by the CEO of the Recording Academy® and presented to the Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, who makes the ultimate decision.
This award is a key element of the Global Music Diplomacy Initiative, launched in 2023 by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, to elevate music as a tool for diplomacy. The initiative aligns with U.S. foreign policy objectives to promote education, economic opportunity, equity, and inclusion through music. Quincy Jones was the inaugural recipient of the PEACE Through Music Award in 2023, with Dolly Parton now carrying forward this distinguished legacy.
