Busch Gardens to retire Kumba as ‘Kumba’s Revenge’ takes shape

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay has confirmed that Kumba, one of the most celebrated roller coasters in the park’s history, will close permanently on 2 August 2026, making way for a new attraction named Kumba’s Revenge. The announcement marks the end of a 33-year run for the Bolliger & Mabillard coaster, which has remained a favourite among enthusiasts since opening in 1993.

The retirement forms part of a wider US$100 million investment programme designed to strengthen Busch Gardens Tampa Bay’s position as one of Florida’s leading thrill destinations. While the park has confirmed the name of the replacement attraction, it has yet to reveal its ride manufacturer, layout or opening timetable.

When Kumba debuted in 1993, it immediately set new benchmarks for Florida’s coaster market. At the time it was the state’s tallest, fastest and longest roller coaster, while its towering vertical loop also claimed a world record. Riders experienced a 135-foot first drop, speeds approaching 60mph and seven inversions during the nearly three-minute circuit.

Jon Vigue, president of Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, said the attraction had become part of the park’s identity over three decades.

‘Kumba has inspired generations of thrill seekers and earned its place as one of the world’s most iconic roller coasters. As we celebrate its incredible legacy, we’re also looking ahead. Kumba’s Revenge will honour everything guests loved about the original while delivering an entirely new level of thrills.’

He added: ‘The legend of Kumba isn’t ending – it’s evolving.’

Annual Pass members will receive exclusive early ride time on 1 August, before the coaster’s final public operating day on 2 August.

Kumba’s closure follows a period of significant change at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. The park has introduced several major additions in recent years while retiring ageing attractions, including Stanley Falls Flume. The replacement of Kumba signals another step in the park’s long-term redevelopment strategy, with further announcements about Kumba’s Revenge expected in the coming months.
