Virginia’s first alpine coaster is now open at Massanutten Resort, marking a significant addition to the state’s attractions market. The new Mountain Mayhem ride strengthens the resort’s Family Adventure Park and forms part of a wider programme of investment designed to attract both regional visitors and longer-stay guests.
Mountain Mayhem opened on 6 July at the Shenandoah Valley resort. The alpine coaster stretches 3,380ft (1,030m), including 2,156ft (657m) of downhill track, and features two full 360-degree spirals. Riders control their own speed using an onboard hand brake, with a maximum speed of 25mph (40km/h). A complete ride lasts around six minutes.
The attraction offers both single and double rider vehicles. Children aged four and above may ride with an accompanying adult, while solo riders must be at least 13 years old. The resort says the coaster has been designed to provide a family experience while allowing guests to choose between a gentle descent or a faster ride through the mountainside.
Kameron Tucker, mountain sports director at Massanutten Resort, said: “We’re excited to welcome members of our local community, as well as resort guests, to experience the all-new Mountain Mayhem. This ride has been under development for quite some time, and we are proud to offer yet another way for those who visit us at Massanutten to enjoy a fun, memorable experience.”
The opening of Virginia’s first alpine coaster also supports the resort’s wider expansion plans. Alongside the new attraction, Massanutten is constructing a new hotel with direct access to its WaterPark, expanding the ShenandoaH2O indoor water park and developing the BluestonePeak active adult community. Resort management says these projects are intended to reinforce Massanutten’s position as a four-season destination on the US East Coast.
Massanutten’s Family Adventure Park already includes zip lines, climbing activities, tubing and gem mining. The addition of Mountain Mayhem further broadens the park’s outdoor adventure offer and reflects the continued popularity of alpine coasters as resorts seek attractions that operate across multiple seasons with relatively modest operating requirements.
