Inspired by the haunting “Danse Macabre” composition by Camille Saint-Saëns, the attraction’s storyline transports visitors back to 1876, the fateful night when conductor Joseph Charlatan and his entire orchestra mysteriously disappeared during a performance. After an eerie rendition of Danse Macabre, the musicians were reportedly devoured by “The Unnamable,” a monstrous cat-like creature that now haunts the site. Efteling and Intamin have designed a rich, immersive experience that brings this haunting tale to life, thrilling audiences of all ages.
Revolutionary Ride Technology and Unique Storytelling
The Dynamic Motion Stage at the heart of Danse Macabre is a one-of-a-kind ride system that combines cutting-edge engineering with 4D effects to create a multi-sensory journey. The attraction’s 18-meter main platform, equipped with six choir stall cabins seating up to 108 guests, rotates freely, tilts up to 25 degrees, and rises to a height of 3 meters. The main platform’s heave and drop speeds, reaching up to 1.5 m/s and 3 m/s respectively, mimic the dance of a falling coin, building suspense with every movement. Guests are enveloped in 4D effects, including scents, “butt kickers,” and on-board audio, adding layers to the storyline and enhancing the immersive experience.
Danse Macabre’s ride design allows for seamless storytelling on multiple levels, combining Efteling’s trademark animatronics, atmospheric theming, and an emotive soundtrack to heighten the supernatural experience. This ghostly adventure takes visitors on a journey through Efteling’s most sinister themed area, where the 20-meter-high attraction building looms over an eerie setting filled with themed dining, retail, and entertainment options. Recommended for guests aged eight and up, this new area promises an exhilarating adventure for all who dare.
