China’s largest retailer by revenue is rolling out a new physical format combining retail, cultural experience and dining across four cities, starting with Suqian in September.
JD.com announced on 22 May 2026 the launch of JD SPACE 京东天地, a new mixed-use commercial format that combines retail, cultural experiences and social dining under one roof. Sites in Suqian, Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai are planned, with openings beginning in September 2026.
JD SPACE is distinct from JD.com’s existing JD MALL format. Where JD MALL focuses on large-scale consumer electronics and home goods, JD SPACE is designed around a broader lifestyle proposition. Each site will bring together JD’s own retail operations — including 101HOME, JD Global Purchase and JD Medical Beauty — alongside third-party brand flagship and concept stores. The format is also planned to include the world’s first JD cosmetics collection store, an outdoor sports store, a premium wine experience store, a high-end audio, camera and gaming store, and a musical instrument flagship.
Underpinning the model is JD’s instant delivery service, designed to allow guests to purchase in-venue and receive goods at home — closing a loop between physical experience and online fulfilment. The company describes this as an omnichannel system built around in-store experience, online repurchase and same-day delivery.
The first site to open, in Suqian — JD.com’s operational heartland and the hometown of founder Liu Qiangdong — reflects that local identity directly. The Suqian site uses a courtyard-style spatial design rooted in local culture, incorporating traditional willow-weaving craft, a form of intangible cultural heritage from the region. It will also house the first JD home furnishing store in eastern China, a JD Jingzao store and the city’s first 7Fresh supermarket.
The move comes as China’s physical retail sector continues to navigate shifting consumer expectations. Footfall-driven formats that blend leisure, culture and retail have grown in prominence across major Chinese cities, and JD SPACE appears to be JD.com’s most direct step into that territory. JD.com is China’s largest retailer by revenue, with revenues exceeding US$158.8 billion in 2024.
