Bahrain explores Six Flags theme park proposal

Listen to this article

Bahrain Six Flags theme park plans are under consideration after a proposal backed by members of the country’s Capital Trustees Board called for the development of a major new entertainment destination. If approved, the project would become the second Six Flags-branded park in the Middle East, following the opening of Six Flags Qiddiya City in Saudi Arabia earlier this year.

The proposal, submitted by board member Dr Bashar Ahmedi and endorsed by the Capital Trustees Board, has now been referred to Bahrain’s development minister for further consideration. While still at an early stage, the concept forms part of wider efforts to strengthen Bahrain’s tourism offering and attract more regional and international visitors.

Speaking about the proposal, Ahmedi said Bahrain should develop a destination with its own character rather than replicate the Saudi project. Potential locations include coastal areas that could support a mixed-use tourism development and create a new landmark for the kingdom.

The timing is notable. Six Flags Qiddiya City has raised the profile of destination-scale theme parks across the Gulf, anchored by headline attractions including Falcons Flight, billed as the world’s tallest, fastest and longest roller coaster. Its launch has reinforced the region’s ambition to compete for international leisure tourism through large-scale entertainment investments.

For Bahrain, a Bahrain Six Flags theme park would complement an expanding portfolio of tourism and leisure projects while broadening its appeal beyond business travel and traditional cultural attractions. The proposal also reflects increasing competition between GCC nations to develop family entertainment destinations capable of attracting multi-day visitors and supporting wider economic diversification strategies.

No development timetable, investment value or operating agreement has been announced, and there is no confirmation that Six Flags has entered into discussions regarding the proposal. At this stage, the concept remains subject to government review before any formal planning or commercial negotiations can begin.
