The Park Playground launches first VR minigame experience “Carnival Showdown”

Immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences provider, The Park Playground has unveiled its latest gaming experience, the company’s first VR minigame called Carnival Showdown.

Carnival Showdown is a brand-new competitive multiplayer VR experience that “brings the fun and familiarity of amusement park games to life in a series of immersive minigames,” according to The Park Playground.

The entertaining experience features three competitive minigames: Copy Cat, Balloon Popper and Bouncy Barrage, all with the primary objective to gather as many points as possible before time runs out.

Taking place in a simulated carnival setting, the in-game host presents players with a spinning prize wheel that determines the order in which the minigames are played. Tapping into familiar fairground activities, Balloon Popper, is a semi-rhythmic activity where players target specific balloons – some adding points and others taking points away.

The next game, Bouncy Barrage, requires players to throw balls at various targets with an opportunity to steal points from other competitors.

In the final game, Copy Cat, players must replicate the poses of the string puppet on stage to earn points. All music within the experiences is set to reflect the growing intensity of the game as it progresses, generating a thrill that encourages players to win.

This experience was designed with accessibility in mind, creating short, simple and intuitive games that even strangers of VR can understand and take part in. Additionally, the game’s difficulty can be adjusted in real time, simplifying the experience for less experienced players and more challenging for familiar users.

To ensure each playthrough is unique, the sequence of minigames is randomised for each playthrough, and there are a series of surprises in store for players.

Between each VR activity, players will receive a short rest break before moving on to the next activity experience. This provides partners with additional selling opportunities to offer beverages and refreshments to further facilitate the comfort and enjoyment of The Park’s customers.

Carnival Showdown is now available to play at its Ghent and Antwerp venues in Belgium to be expanded across all its locations.

The Park Playground confirmed that the experience will also become available for businesses to purchase as an additional experience to their existing VR systems.

Guests in attendance at IAAPA Expo Europe to demo were able to see a special demo performance of Carnival Showdown.

“We’re really looking forward to distributing Carnival Showdown across all our venues to deliver a brand-new style of experience for our customers. To run this experience, businesses only need a 2×2 playing field per player, which is perfect for those with limited space that want to tap into VR,” said Gilles-Adrien Cenni, CTO, The Park Playground.

“During the gradual roll-out process, we’ll be focused on optimising the flow of this experience to ensure we provide the greatest value possible for VR customers. We’ve seen exceptional results so far and we’re working to deliver additional minigames that will be offered as part of Carnival Showdown, so that guests can experience something different each time they play.”

Carnival Showdown takes on a new approach to The Park’s existing VR experiences, moving away from longer, story-telling experiences and steering toward a series of shorter, points-driven activities. Designed for all who enjoy a fun and competitive challenge, the experience sees groups of up to four people aged seven or above.

The experience can be applied as an introduction to VR or extended as a stand-alone activity for customers. The fast-paced, engaging nature of these minigames supports replayability, encouraging customers to return frequently.
