A theme park centred on the fictional cartoon character Hello Kitty, is set to open in the province of Hainan in 2024.
Hainan Hello Kitty Paradise is estimated to cost $1.6 billion and will be home to shopping outlets and a hotel.
The attraction site will be located in the coastal city of Sanya’s Haitang Bay. The theme park is forecast to attract around 2 million visitors every year.
In a drive to become an internationally recognised tourist destination, the province of Hainan has been developing a number of branded theme parks and entertainment sites in recent years.
In 2018, the region signed a deal with Merlin Entertainments Group to construct a Legoland theme park in Sanya.
The same year it was also announced that the American company Viacom Inc. was on track to launch international entertainment and cultural brands to operate global brand themed parks across the Hainan province.
In 2017, Shimao Group licensed Hello Kitty from the Japanese firm Sanrio, designers of the highly popular Hello Kitty character, and announced the opening of an indoor Hello Kitty theme park in Shanghai.
