France’s newest theme park was officially unveiled to a party of 1,000 invited guests earlier this month.

Parc Spirou in Monteux near Avignon was inaugurated on June 1 in the company of VIPs including French minister of culture Françoise Nyssen. Also there, in addition to various national and regional politicians, were Parc Spirou president Daniel Bullard and Vincent Monagne, representative of Spirou rights holder Média Participations. After a period of rainy spells, the weather was on their side as they sampled an available seven attractions. The park then opened to the general public on June 16.

Located a short drive from French Riveria, the park its adjacent to the existing Splash World waterpark. It features the comic book characters Spirou, Lucky Luke, Marsupilami, Gaston Lagaffe and Zombillenium.

“The creation of this park is a real opportunity for our region,” said Renaud Muselier, president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region and also a member of the European Parliament. “Its strategic and very accessible location in one of the most touristic areas of Europe are unique assets. The park will reinvigorate this territory with 200 permanent jobs , including 50 in the first year, as well as more than 170 seasonal jobs.”
