Continuing its expansion into Asia, Universal Studios has confirmed plans to build a Hollywood-style theme park near Beijing, China.

Due to open in the Tongzhou district to the east of the Chinese capital in 2019, the park will be developed and operated as a joint venture between Universal Parks and Resorts and Beijing Shouhuan Cultural Tourism Investment Company, a state-owned consortium.

The park will be built in two phases. The first, at 300 acres, will include entertainment and the first ever Universal-branded hotel. The second phase, potentially expanding the resort to 1,000 acres, is planned to add a further theme park, a waterpark and five more hotels.

It will be Universal's third theme park in Asia, following similar ventures in Singapore and Japan.
