A sneak peek of a new Marvel attraction planned for Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) was unveiled recently to Disney fans at D23 Expo Japan.

Following the opening last year of Iron Man Experience, the new attraction will be the second Marvel ride-through experience visitors to the Hong Kong park can enjoy, and the only one of its kind in the world.

In what appears to be an interactive dark ride, guests will team up with Ant-Man and The Wasp to fight Arnim Zola and his army of Hydra swarm bots. It’s part of a multi-year expansion at HKDL that will bring a new attraction or entertainment offering almost every year through until 2023, including an entire Marvel-themed area.

Hong Kong Disneyland has become “the ultimate hub for exciting Marvel experiences in Asia,” claims Disney. Following the debut of Iron Man Experience, which quickly became the park’s most popular attraction, a Marvel Super Hero Summer celebration was staged last year. Then, in September, HKDL hosted the Marvel 10K Weekend, with a record-breaking 10,000 runners from around the world signed up to race through the resort.

But before Ant-Man comes to Hong Kong, HKDL guests can look forward to a new stage show. Moana: A Homecoming Celebration will feature the newest heroine from Walt Disney Animation Studios and is set to be performed in the park’s Adventureland areas as from May.

As part of the ongoing HKDL expansion, which began officially in October, construction has begun on a transformation of the park’s castle centrepiece, which will feature a new daytime show and nighttime spectacular. A new Frozen-themed area is also planned.

New Disney attractions around the world

As well as the renderings you see here for the new Marvel attraction in Hong Kong, Disney Parks and Resorts chairman Bob Chapek revealed details of several other upcoming Disney theme park projects during his presentation to D23 Expo Japan. These include:

• A Marvel makeover for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at Walt Disney Studios Park, Disneyland Paris. That means the rock band Aerosmith will be replaced by the likes of Iron Man and the Avengers. The resort’s Hotel New York is also in line for a renovation, showcasing The Art of Marvel.

• A Guardians of the Galaxy indoor rollercoaster is coming to EPCOT at Walt Disney World in Florida, featuring a “one-of-a-kind” ride system.

• Mickie and Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida will use new technologies to bring the two-dimensional world of the cartoon mice to life. It opens in 2019.

• An opening date – June 23 this year – has been confirmed for Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure.

• Several new attractions are planned next year for Tokyo Disney Resort as it undergoes its biggest expansion since the opening of Tokyo DisneySea in 2001. These include a Big Hero 6 themed ride, a Beauty and the Beast area at Tokyo Disneyland’s Fantasyland, plus an upgraded Soarin’ attraction for Tokyo DisneySea, with a ride film celebrating Japan.

• As well as the Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge areas being built at Disney’s resorts in Florida and California, a Star Wars hotel concept is in development. Guests will board a starship before departing on a Star Wars adventure.

D23 Expo Japan, run by the official Disney fan club, ran from February 10 to 12 at Tokyo Disney Resort.
