Plans for a 20th Century Fox World theme park in Dubai are on hold amid concerns about oversupply of theme parks in the region.

After securing a licensing partnership with Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products, Middle Eastern conglomerate Al Ahli Holding Group (AAHG) unveiled plans in 2016 to build the Fox-branded park and resort in emirate, hoping to open it in 2020. Design and production services were being handled by Rethink Leisure & Entertainment of California.

Since that announcement, Dubai has already welcomed two movie parks including Motiongate and Bollywood Parks, Legoland Dubai and the IP-heavy IMG Worlds of Adventure. Another movie park, Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi, will open in the neighbouring emirate this summer. More theme parks are rumoured or already on the way in the United Arab Emirates, including further projects in Dubai.

“We’ve realised that there’s now a serious supply of theme parks in Dubai,” Al Ahli Group CEO Mohammed Khammas told Arabian Business recently.

Plans remain in place for a separate 20th Century Fox World theme park to open at Resorts World Genting in Malaysia towards the end of this year.
