The opening of Six Flags Qiddiya City marks a significant milestone for the global attractions industry, introducing the first Six Flags destination built outside North America. Located within Saudi Arabia’s vast Qiddiya entertainment development, the park features 28 attractions designed to push the boundaries of scale, technology and storytelling.
Among the companies contributing to the project is Vekoma Rides Manufacturing, which supplied three roller coasters to the park: Iron Rattler, Adrena-Line and Twilight Express. Together, the trio reflects the breadth of the manufacturer’s current portfolio, spanning high-intensity thrills through to immersive family experiences.
“Being part of the Six Flags Qiddiya project has been an incredible experience for us at Vekoma,” the company explains. “Delivering world-class attractions like Iron Rattler, Adrena-Line and Twilight Express for such a visionary and unique destination is something we’re truly proud of.”
According to the company, the combination of attractions was intentionally selected to showcase different aspects of its design and engineering approach.
“The attractions chosen for Six Flags Qiddiya are a perfect combination and nicely represent Vekoma’s diverse and innovative portfolio,” the team says. “Each ride highlights a different strength of our capabilities: Iron Rattler delivers intense thrills with dynamic elements, Adrena-Line offers a unique high-adrenaline experience that pushes the boundaries of family thrill, and Twilight Express combines immersive storytelling with smooth, family-friendly excitement.”
Iron Rattler: redefining the tilt coaster
The most prominent of the three installations is Iron Rattler, which has already secured a place in the record books as the world’s tallest tilt coaster.
Tilt coasters remain one of the rarest and most technically sophisticated coaster types currently in operation, and Vekoma has used the project to demonstrate how the concept can evolve into a flagship attraction for modern theme parks.
“Iron Rattler stands out as the tallest tilt coaster to date, but its uniqueness goes far beyond height,” Vekoma explains. “What truly sets it apart is the seamless integration of cutting-edge tilt technology with a bold, dynamic layout that delivers an unmatched thrill experience.”
At the heart of the attraction lies a mechanically actuated tilt track section. After climbing the lift hill, the train rolls onto a platform where the track locks beneath it before rotating forward to a near-vertical angle. The engineered pause before the drop creates a moment of anticipation rarely achieved by traditional coaster designs.
“The tilt feature creates an extraordinary moment of suspense before the plunge, amplifying anticipation and adrenaline for every rider,” the company notes.
Once released, the train plunges into a sweeping high-speed descent followed by a sequence of banked turns, airtime moments and directional transitions designed to sustain velocity while maintaining ride comfort. Vekoma’s modern track profiling minimises lateral forces while delivering a fluid and dynamic ride experience.
Theming and onboard technology
Beyond the mechanical innovation, Iron Rattler has been designed as a fully immersive attraction. The queue and pre-launch areas incorporate scenic installations, lighting and narrative elements intended to extend the storytelling experience.
Custom themed trains further reinforce the attraction’s identity. These feature ergonomic seating, onboard entertainment components and integrated LED lighting systems designed to enhance both atmosphere and visibility during evening operations.
“The trains’ integrated LED lighting is the perfect solution for night-time operation,” Vekoma explains. “It enhances visibility, atmosphere and narrative impact when the park is at its most dramatic after dark.”
A balanced coaster line-up
While Iron Rattler delivers the headline thrills, Vekoma’s other two coasters play equally important roles in the park’s ride mix.
Adrena-Line has been designed as a high-energy family-thrill coaster, offering an experience that bridges the gap between entry-level attractions and extreme thrill rides. By combining accessible ride dynamics with a more intense pace, it targets teenagers and families seeking a stronger adrenaline experience.
Twilight Express, meanwhile, focuses on storytelling and accessibility. The attraction blends smooth coaster design with themed environments, providing a ride suitable for a broad audience and reinforcing the park’s multi-generational appeal.
Together, the three rides illustrate the increasingly diverse expectations placed on modern coaster design.
“Each of these attractions represents a different facet of our expanding portfolio,” Vekoma explains. “From high-intensity thrill rides to family thrill hybrids and narrative-driven experiences, our goal is to create attractions that serve every guest profile.”
A new benchmark for thrill attractions
For Vekoma, Iron Rattler in particular represents a significant step forward in coaster innovation.
“Iron Rattler is more than just the world’s tallest tilt coaster,” the company says. “It demonstrates how advanced engineering, immersive design and operational reliability can come together to create a high-value anchor attraction.”
As new global leisure destinations continue to emerge, projects such as Six Flags Qiddiya City illustrate how ride technology and themed storytelling are increasingly integrated to create large-scale experiences.
“With modern engineering enhancements, stronger integration with themed environments and carefully designed ride pacing, Iron Rattler shows how the tilt coaster concept can evolve into a true marquee attraction,” Vekoma concludes.
For the manufacturer, the debut of Iron Rattler – alongside Adrena-Line and Twilight Express – highlights not only the scale of the Qiddiya project, but also the continuing evolution of coaster design as parks seek new ways to deliver memorable, repeatable experiences for guests.
