Portugal unveils plans for €12m São João da Mata Adventure Park

Portugal could add another significant visitor attraction to its growing leisure market after local authorities unveiled plans for the São João da Mata Adventure Park, a €12 million (£10 million) development in the municipality of Castanheira de Pêra. If approved, the project would transform 45 hectares of woodland into an outdoor adventure destination centred on active experiences rather than traditional amusement rides.

The proposed São João da Mata Adventure Park forms part of a wider strategy to expand tourism beyond Portugal’s coastal hotspots. Castanheira de Pêra already attracts visitors to Praia das Rocas, home to the country’s largest wave pool, as well as its mountain landscapes and walking trails. Local leaders hope the new attraction will encourage longer stays and increase year-round visitation.

Current plans include an alpine coaster, zipline, treetop adventure courses, climbing facilities, downhill mountain bike trails, free-fall experiences and Crazy Cart attractions aimed at younger visitors. Rather than focusing on conventional theme park rides, the project is designed around outdoor recreation and the surrounding natural environment.

One of the most notable elements is a proposed one-kilometre cable car linking the centre of Castanheira de Pêra with the new park. The aerial connection would also provide direct access to Praia das Rocas, creating a combined destination that brings together water-based activities and land-based adventure experiences within a single visitor offer.

The development is expected to be delivered in three phases. António Henriques, mayor of Castanheira de Pêra, said the project has been designed around environmental, economic and social sustainability, with the aim of creating jobs while supporting local hotels, restaurants and businesses. The municipality believes the attraction could strengthen the region’s competitiveness as a tourism destination, although no construction timetable or opening date has yet been announced.

The proposal follows several major leisure investments announced in Portugal during recent months, highlighting continued confidence in the country’s visitor economy. While the São João da Mata Adventure Park remains at the planning stage, its combination of nature-based attractions and existing tourism assets reflects the growing demand for outdoor adventure experiences across Europe.
