Kynren brings live-action storytelling to the attractions market

Opening on 18 July, Kynren – The Storied Lands expands a successful night show into a full-day attraction built around immersive historical performances rather than traditional rides.

The team behind Kynren – The Storied Lands will open what it describes as the UK’s first live-action historical show park on 18 July in Bishop Auckland, County Durham. The new attraction broadens the long-running Kynren – An Epic Tale of England evening production into a full-day visitor experience centred on live performance, large-scale sets and historical storytelling rather than conventional rides.

The development reflects growing interest in experience-led attractions that encourage guests to spend longer on site through scheduled entertainment, immersive environments and themed dining. The initial season runs until 12 September.

Visitors will move between five themed productions during the day. These include The Trusty Steed, a medieval horsemanship spectacular, The Lost Feather, featuring more than 250 birds including eagles, vultures and owls, Land of the Vikings, a live-action combat arena with an adjoining Viking settlement, Legend of the Wear, a lakeside production inspired by the Lambton Worm legend, and Victorian Imaginariums, an interactive maze populated by period characters.

Unlike a traditional theme park, each experience operates to a daily performance schedule. The attraction combines theatrical staging with immersive environments, allowing guests to explore themed villages and arenas between shows. Food outlets and an optional themed dining experience extend the visit into the evening before guests can attend Kynren – An Epic Tale of England, which continues to run on selected summer evenings.

The daytime attraction builds on a production that has welcomed audiences since 2016 and is supported by a cast and crew of around 1,000 volunteers. Future phases are expected to add further themed environments, including an expanded Victorian village with more than 40 buildings, as the destination develops into a larger historical attraction.

For the attractions industry, Kynren – The Storied Lands demonstrates an alternative approach to destination development. Rather than relying on mechanical rides, the project uses live entertainment, heritage themes, animal presentations and immersive set design to create a full-day experience. As operators continue to diversify their offer, the County Durham attraction provides a notable example of how performance-based experiences can form the centrepiece of a modern visitor destination.
